Kayaking the Water Trails in Everglades National Park

Everglades National Park is loaded with opportunities for adventure and discovery. With 1.5 million acres of wilderness, this protected habitat has plenty of space for you and your family to set out on your Everglades excursion. Kayaking and canoeing are among the most popular activities to engage in while visiting scenic Everglades National Park. Even if you don’t own a watercraft to go out on the water, you can always rent a kayak. Trips range from just a few hours to even days – depending how in depth you wish your jaunt into nature to be. Along the way, you’ll encounter a plethora of interesting plants and animals that make up this diverse and lush ecosystem. Manatees, alligators, various species of birds, butterflies, and the elusive Florida panther are just a few of the magnificent creatures that call the Everglades home. Of course, taking your kayak into such dense vegetation and waters that are manipulated by the elements can be somewhat dangerous. It’s imperative that you take proper precautions before setting out into this raw wilderness.
  • Make sure you have the most detailed kayak/canoe trail guide to ensure you don’t get lost on your journey. Know where you’re going and how you’re going to get there.
  • Most running water can be mostly mosquito free but it’s good practice to keep a pair of long pants, closed-toed shoes, and insect repellent in your backpack in case those winged pests decide to come out.
  • Wind and rain can be particularly dangerous. Rising waters and high winds could set you off course and into harm’s way. Make sure you know what the day’s weather forecast is when planning your trip.
  • If you have any reservations or unresolved questions, head into one of the park’s visitor centers and speak with the knowledgeable staff.
This may not be the ideal experience for everyone. Some people may prefer a guided tour of places like Gator Park or Shark Valley. For the avid outdoorsman or budding nature enthusiast, however, taking a kayak trip through Everglades National Park could be just the ticket for an unforgettable Florida experience.
